reflection
I went on a field trip to ASU with my digital media class and I have to say, I was impressed. It was very nice and seemed like a great college. I might just want to go there when I graduate. It looks like a great opportunity for me to advance my skills. thank you ASU.
ASU Journalism Feild Trip by Paige
On Wednesday November 30th Mrs. Westover’s IDM III class, and Mrs. LaHaie’s journalism class took a trip to ASU to view the schools tech and journalism classes. While there, we went to the channel twelve news building and a reporter of twelve news, taught us about what they do there. The thing he talked about that I found the most interesting was when he told us their writing techniques. They like their stories written with the best details possible while keeping the story short and precise. They do not like a lot of extra details (or fluff). He also said that when people read or watch the news they want to know the stories quickly, people will not want to listen to a lot of “fluff”. He said that it takes great skill to be able to write stories in an exciting way without putting your own opinion or “fluff” in it. I would like to be good at writing news stories and that’s why I found this interesting.
ASU and Cronkite School
On November 30 the Interactive Digital Media class along with a few students from the Journalism class had the opportunity to travel to the ASU campus. When we first arrived we received a tour of the Cronkite School. Finding out more about who they are as a school and what they stand for. That was very interesting. Then we went to the Arizona Republic building and got a tour of the Chanel 12 newsroom. That was one of the best experiences ever. It was so interesting to see how everything happens and how simple things are over there. The size of the actual stand was nothing I thought it would be. After that we went up to tour some of the Arizona Republic things like the newspaper room and they website offices. After that we went to the Polytech School and played with all their equipment. That was super cool to play with all the expensive toys!
Field Trip to Channel 12

IDM Students LIVE at Channel 12 News!
Students took a day off from their regular classes at Snowflake High School to travel to ASU Phoenix and Mesa campuses to explore some post secondary career options in journalism and digital media. Highlights of the tour were the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communicaton, The Arizona Republic and Channel 12 News. Students were also able to go to the ASU East Campus which is now called the ASU Poly Technical Center where Professor Dollin and Grad Student, Chad Westover, demonstrated some of the high speed motion cameras being used at the facility.
ASU/AZ Republic Trip
A group of students were given the opportunity to go on a trip down to Arizona State University and the Arizona Republic to explore a career in broadcasting, journalism, and digital media. While taking a look behind the scenes we learned that there were way more then just the reporters, that were in-charge of making everything run smoothly; you have the switch board conductors, editors, reporters, camera crew, and more! My favorite part though would have to be the Polytechnic School (ASU), it really showed us the graphic part of things. We were taught about the different cameras, computer programs, equipment that would help you in the digital part of things. All in all we learned a lot of what you can really get into when you graduate high school and want to further your career in the media area.
Trip to ASU
Our trip to ASU was awesome. We had so much fun visiting and getting to know Arizona State University. We also made a trip to the Arizona Republic, which was like a block away from where ASU is located. We got to see the 12 News studio and weather center, and tour all of the floors where broadcasting goes on.
From there we made a trip to the ASU polytechnic campus. We also got to observe what goes on there, including some very modern and amazing equipment. We got a taste of what college life is like, and how interesting it can be. The technology available there is astonishing. We had the most extraordinary time. I would love to make a trip back and visit sometime soon.
ASU/ Arizona Republic
Yesterday was a really fun and exciting day for me. My classmates and I from IDM and Journalism got a chance to go to ASU and to the Arizona Republic and also the ASU Polytech center. We got a chance to sit down and talk to Anita from ASU. She mentioned a lot about there students going out and getting information for their website. Anita also mentioned that some of the ASU students got a chance to go to the Dominican Republic and do some interviews and articles. We also got a chance to see around the building a little bit more. Johnny who was a senior at ASU showed us around a little more. He mentioned that he is more into sports journalism. He showed us the room where they do their broadcasting. I really liked the room and I thought that I was a really fun job, but I wouldn’t really consider journalism as my interest. Later on we went to the Arizona Republic and we got the see the studio in which they film the 12 news. The studio was really awesome,I really couldn’t focus on what the lady was saying because I was to busy looking at the studio. There were big cameras everywhere and computer technology in every direction that you looked at. We got a chance to take some pictures of the studio and we also got to see where they would broadcast the news from. The lady showing us around took us outside to where they shoot the weather broadcasting part. It looks so real and its only a blank screen that they need to stand by. The other technology takes care of the rest. I thought that the 12 news studio was amazing, I also loved how everybody there works as a team to create a good news broadcast. After that we all got to eat lunch in the ASU campus, it was really good and they had everything nice and organized. During our lunch break me and my friends got a chance to take a break and just look around the place, we also took a lot of pictures. After lunch we headed over to the ASU Polytech Center where we got a chance to meet with Chad Westover and explore the amazing things. Such as great photography photos. Everywhere i looked i was amazed at the photos, I liked the one that Chad showed us that he did. It was a girl turning but it was a photograph in like slow motion. I really liked it and before we went into the photography studio I immediately knew that was what I wanted to go to school for. Photography and Film is really what i liked to do. I was amazed to see the photos taken after you popped a ballon. Some students got a chance to take some pictures so that we could see the pictures. I really think that was the fun thing that I did, probably because that is the thing that I really want to do when I go to college. Over all the trip was really awesome and a really cool experience I got to see some cool things and I learned a lot more things than I knew before. I hope that I will be able to get a chance to go next year as my Senior year because it was a really nice experience.
