Thirtieth Annual Native American Education Banquet
“Education… The most powerful tool you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela
In May 2014, the Native Education department not only celebrated thirty years within the Snowflake Unified School District, but also celebrated and recognized our high school graduates and junior high promotees. The Native Education department was honored to have Mr. Pax Harvey come to offer his experiences and to motivate our students. The program also included some traditional singing with our one and only high school principal, Mr. Larry Titus, our very own student service director, Mrs. Cindy Peterson, along with a couple of parents and grandparents to help with the traditional Navajo round dance.
The Native Education department is very proud to acknowledge the recipients of the $500 Native American Club scholarship awards: Miss Amber Livingston and Miss Tandis Yellowhair. The Native Education committee presented a special award to Miss Tamaria Shone as she was inducted to the National Honor Society.
Our Native Education committee also presented awards to our eighth grade promotees who received the highest GPA within our program: Miss Karen Dineyazhe and Mr. Quentin Belin. We also presented athletic awards. High school honorees were Adrean Begay (soccer), Hunter Frost (wrestling), Rachelle King (volleyball and basketball), Tandis Yellowhair (volleyball and basketball), and Tyler Yellowhair (football). Eighth grade honorees were Miles Bahe (football and basketball), Daniel Frost (wrestling), and Arturo Munoz (football).
We are proud of all our students, and we wish them the best in their future endeavors!

2013 Native American Heritage Program
Snowflake USD Indian Education department proudly celebrated their first 2013 Native American Heritage month held in November. The department provided culturally enriched information for the entire school district, students, parents, and the community. Our presenters offered cultural information regarding the teepee, which was set up at Highland Primary baseball field. They also provided a taste fest offering various tribal foods from tribes such as Navajo, Hopi, Laguna Pueblo, Kiowa, Sioux, and Apache. We’re proud to say, the event was pulled together by the Indian Education committee, parent advisory committee, Snowflake High Schools Native American Club officers, and the Indian Education coordinator. This event is one of many different educational activities we offer for our students here in our district. Many of the dancers and participants are students who attend Snowflake Unified School District. We look forward to seeing parents and students continue their involvement with the Johnson-O’Malley and Title VII programs.
NACE Hosts Tour of Northern Arizona University
The NACE Organization’s vision is to promote Native American cultural awareness and emphasizing Native American teachings and values. The NACE organization invited Snowflake Unified Schools, Northland Pioneer College, Holbrook Schools, and Amphitheater Public Schools to visit with their staff and students and to join them on a tour of the Northern Arizona University campus to meet and greet with faculty and students as well as spending a day with current NAU students in their respective major and/or interests. The purpose of this event was to create a cultural atmosphere for incoming freshmen, high school students, and eighth grade students who are interested in pursuing a higher education and to let these students know what NAU’s university life and Native American club organizations has to offer! The Snowflake Indian Education Committee along with the Coordinator were very excited to be part of this educational event and will continue to support this travel for our students. We would like to thank the parents and faculty for their support. Ahe’ hee (Thank you)!
